| The Modern Pentathlon was introduced into the Olympics in Stockholm in 1912. The sport comprises five disciplines - pistol shooting, epee fencing, swimming, horse riding (equestrian show jumping) and cross-country running. All events are contested on the same day.
Modern Pentathlon, introduced by the founder of the modern Olympic movement Baron Pierre de Coubertin, is a points-based event with the points from the first four events determining the starting position for the final event. Thus the cross-country element effectively becomes a handicap event, with the first three crossing the line filling the medal positions. |
